After giving birth your body confidence and self-esteem can plummet. Resuming regular exercise can help you get back in shape and give you some much needed "me time". But slowly does it....
During pregnancy the body releases a hormone called relaxin, which allows joint laxity. After pregnancy your pelvic floor and joints need time to recover and get back to normal. By running too soon there is a risk of damage to the pelvic floor and joints. At Jelly Legs we therefore recommend a women must wait for her six week check up before resuming intensive exercise and significantly longer if you have had a C-section. You might be keen to grab your running shoes and kit but please listen to your body as a one-size fits all approach can't be applied to post-pregnancy running. How quickly you begin running will be dependent on your fitness levels before your pregnancy.
This is why at Jelly Legs we take things nice and slowly, focusing on strengthening those muscles which have been weakened during pregnancy and to build up your fitness using walking and specially designed resistance and cardio training. You need your strength back to keep up with the demands of new motherhood, so we ensure that your workouts are energising, not depleting. We offer much more than a walk in the park, plus you don't need to think about childcare arrangements as your buggy helps with resistance training. Making time for exercise is the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby.
Our parents come from all different walks of life. When you have a baby, suddenly, everything changes in your life, so by joining our Mums and Buggies classes you not only reap the rewards of exercising outdoors you also find you have a new found support network around you.
Your gait may have changed or your arches may have dropped during pregnancy so it's a good idea to go to a running store and get your feet reassessed. Your breasts will need more support and if you are still breastfeeding you need to ensure you are well hydrated before and after a session. As part of membership to Jelly Legs you will receive a membership card which entitles you to a discount at the local specialised sports retailers.
